The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development that has the potential for commercialization.

About

The Small Business Innovation Research Program at the U.S. Department of Education provides funding for the development and evaluation of new education technologies. The program is run through the Department’s Institute of Education Sciences research office. Funding is awarded in two phases – Phase I provides up to $250,000 for prototype development and testing, while Phase II provides up to $1 million for full product development and evaluation. The Department issues annual solicitations for proposals, usually in the winter, with deadlines around 60 days later. Awards are announced within about 90 days of the deadline. Funded projects start soon after receiving the award.
