Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) – National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) – U.S. Department of Commerce

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development that has the potential for commercialization.

About

Each year, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publishes a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) inviting small businesses to submit Phase I proposals for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The NOFO lists specific areas of interest where NIST is seeking innovative research and development projects. Small businesses with robust research capabilities in any of the identified areas are encouraged to apply for Phase I funding. To be eligible for the more substantial Phase II awards, companies must first complete a Phase I project funded through NIST’s SBIR program.
